Why Your Nervous System Matters More Than You Think

Nothing depletes us more than stress. Nothing.

When your nervous system is running in overdrive, it’s not just “feeling stressed.” It’s the master switchboard for your hormones, digestion, mood, and even your immune system. If it’s dysregulated, everything from your energy levels to your ability to feel joy can take a hit.

I learned this the hard way. When I began my nutrition diploma, my boys were still young, and my nervous system was already running on empty. I thought learning about health would help me fix myself. But here’s the truth: if you enter a high-stress environment from a state of depletion, the only thing you get is more depletion.

From Wired to Worn Out: My Crash-and-Rebuild Story

I spent my first year studying full-time, constantly in “tired but wired” mode. My body was running on adrenaline — heart pounding, lying awake at night, sometimes on the edge of panic. My gut was a mess. And then came the crash: extreme exhaustion, brain fog, and tears just below the surface. I had to take six months off to recover.

Looking back, I can see my nervous system for what it truly is: a channel.

The Nervous System as a Channel, Not a Container

I love the way author Kate Northrup puts it — the nervous system isn’t a container you fill up until it overflows. It’s a channel. A living, dynamic pathway for life, energy, and connection.

When that channel is open and regulated, everything flows — your hormones, your digestion, your joy. When it’s clogged or scrambled with stress signals, it’s like static on a radio: messages get distorted, energy drains away, and your body shifts into survival mode.

And our channels are not separate. Especially as mothers, our systems are deeply wired to those we love most. My boys’ energy affected mine, and mine affected theirs. A dysregulated system in one person can ripple through the whole family.
