Why Your Nervous System Is the Missing Piece in Every Midlife Health Problem

Nothing depletes us more than stress. Nothing.

Not just emotionally — but nutritionally, hormonally, and energetically.

The hormonal chaos. The stubborn belly fat. The gut issues. The fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. The mood swings that feel like they belong to someone else.

Your nervous system is the master switchboard for all of it.

The Nervous System as a Channel, Not a Container

I love the way author Kate Northrup describes this — and it's become one of my favourite ways to explain it to clients.

Your nervous system isn't a container that fills up until it overflows.

It's a channel. A living, dynamic pathway for energy, information, and connection.

When that channel is open and regulated, everything flows — your hormones communicate clearly, your digestion works, your mood is stable, your body can repair and restore itself.

When it's clogged or scrambled with stress signals — it's like static on a radio. Messages get distorted. Energy drains away. Your body shifts into survival mode.

And in survival mode, your body's number one priority is safety. Not healing. Not balance. Not feeling good.

Just getting through.

Which is exactly why so many women feel like they're doing everything right — and still feel terrible.

My Own Crash (And What It Taught Me)

I learned this the hard way.

When I started my nutrition diploma, my boys were still young and my nervous system was already running on empty. I thought learning about health would help me fix myself.

What I didn't understand was that if you enter a high-stress environment from a state of depletion — the only thing you get is more depletion.

I spent that first year in what I now recognise as classic "tired but wired" mode. Heart pounding. Lying awake at night. Sometimes on the edge of panic. My gut was a mess. And then came the crash — extreme exhaustion, brain fog, and tears sitting just below the surface all the time.

I had to take six months off to recover.

Looking back, I can see so clearly what was happening. My nervous system wasn't just stressed — it was dysregulated at a deep level. And every system in my body was paying the price.

That experience — combined with years of working with clients through MCM and The Body Code — has given me a very clear picture of what a dysregulated nervous system actually does to a woman's body.

And it's so much more than just feeling stressed.

What a Dysregulated Nervous System Actually Does

This is the part most practitioners miss.

When your nervous system is stuck in a stress response, it doesn't just make you feel anxious or overwhelmed. It physically changes how your body functions.

Your hormones go haywire. Cortisol stays chronically elevated, which directly suppresses progesterone production — contributing to mood swings, heavier periods, and anxiety. It also disrupts thyroid function, slowing your metabolism and deepening the fatigue.

Your metabolism shifts into protection mode. Insulin resistance increases, making belly fat harder to lose no matter what you eat. Your body is literally holding on — because it doesn't feel safe to let go.

Your gut stops working properly. The gut-brain connection runs through the vagus nerve, and chronic stress disrupts this communication completely. Bloating, IBS, food sensitivities, poor nutrient absorption — often these aren't food problems. They're nervous system problems.

Your fascia, muscles and connective tissue brace. This is something I've discovered again and again through MCM — and it's not talked about enough. When the nervous system perceives threat, the body physically braces. Tension is stored in the fascia, muscle tissue and connective tissue. Your body holds on — literally — and that holding pattern can become chronic without you even realising it.

Your body burns through nutrients at an alarming rate. Constant stress rapidly depletes magnesium and vitamin C — two nutrients essential for hormone production, nervous system function and stress recovery. This is why you can be eating well and still feel nutritionally depleted.

This is why I so deeply believe that energy healing combined with targeted nutritional support is one of the most powerful approaches to healing. They work on different layers of the same problem — and together, the results can be profound.

What I Actually See In Sessions

The woman who came to me recently in her 50s is one I keep thinking about.

On the surface she was functioning. Holding it together. Getting things done.

But she was a classic case of what I call "coping, but not coping."

Belly fat that wouldn't shift. That constant feeling of being switched on with no off button. Adrenal depletion so deep it had become her normal.

When we did her nervous system reset as part of her MCM session — something shifted that I genuinely wasn't expecting in terms of how visibly it showed up.

She melted.

Right in front of me on Zoom, her whole physiology changed. The tension in her face released. Her shoulders dropped. Her breathing slowed. Something that had been braced for a very long time finally let go.

That's what a regulated nervous system feels like.

And that's what becomes possible when we stop treating symptoms and start working with the system that's driving them all.

The MCM Nervous System Reset — What It Actually Involves

Inside MCM I do something called a Nervous System Reset — and it looks different for every person because every nervous system has its own unique pattern of dysregulation.

A full reset involves working with the different branches of the nervous system individually — identifying where each one is dysregulated, then resetting, realigning and rebalancing. Once each part has been addressed, I reintegrate them back together — and then back into the body as a whole.

It sounds technical. And in some ways it is.

But the experience of it is usually the opposite of technical.

It's a release. A settling. A coming home to yourself.

Using The Body Code as a map alongside MCM, I can identify exactly where the nervous system is holding, what's keeping it stuck, and what it needs to finally feel safe enough to let go.

Because that's always the goal — safety.

When your nervous system feels safe, everything changes.

The Nutritional Layer — Because It's Not Either/Or

Here's something I feel strongly about:

Energy healing and nutrition are not competing approaches. They're complementary layers of the same healing process.

Your body needs both.

Because while we're releasing the energetic and emotional patterns keeping your nervous system dysregulated — your body also needs the physical building blocks to repair, restore and regulate itself.

Chronic stress burns through magnesium and vitamin C rapidly — along with other vital minerals and antioxidants your body depends on. When these are depleted, your nervous system simply cannot function optimally no matter what else you do.

This is why I often recommend targeted nutritional support alongside the energetic work — sometimes a specialised nervous system blend, sometimes specific minerals or adaptogens, always based on what your body is actually asking for through muscle testing.

When the energetic and physical layers are supported together — the results can come quickly. Better sleep. Steadier moods. More energy. A greater sense of emotional resilience.

This is what I want you to really take in.

Your nervous system isn't just one piece of the puzzle.

It's the piece that all the other pieces connect to.

When it regulates — hormones have a chance to stabilise. Digestion improves. Sleep deepens. Inflammation reduces. Energy returns. Mood lifts. The weight your body has been holding onto — physically and emotionally — starts to soften.

And something else happens too.

You stop just getting through.

And start actually living.

More present. More open. More yourself.

As Kate Northrup says — when the channel is clear, life flows through it differently.

That's not a metaphor. That's physiology.
