Can Stress Cause Digestive Problems?
If you've ever had butterflies in your stomach before a big event — or found yourself running to the bathroom when you're anxious — you've already experienced the powerful connection between your mind and your gut.
Spoiler: it's not a coincidence. And it's definitely not all in your head.
How Stress Affects Digestion
When you're stressed, your body switches into fight-or-flight mode. Blood flow moves away from your digestive organs toward your muscles, your heart rate speeds up, and digestion slows right down.
Over time, chronic stress can lead to:
Bloating and discomfort
Constipation or diarrhoea
Food sensitivities
Poor nutrient absorption
Increased inflammation in the gut
For some women, this can trigger or worsen conditions like IBS — which is often treated as purely a physical problem, when the nervous system is actually driving the whole thing.
Why the Gut–Brain Connection Matters
Your gut and brain are in constant conversation through the vagus nerve — often called your body's internal communication highway.
When your nervous system is dysregulated — stuck in stress mode — it disrupts this conversation. Your gut doesn't get the signal that it's safe to digest, repair, or function normally.
This is why calming the nervous system is often just as important as what you eat when it comes to gut healing. You can take all the right probiotics and eat all the right foods — but if your body is still in survival mode, it will limit how much good any of it can actually do.
My Approach — Working With The Body, Not Against It
In my own journey, addressing stress was the turning point in healing my digestion.
Using The Body Code and my own Metabolic Circuitry Method (MCM), I work with clients to identify and release the trapped emotions, stress patterns and energetic imbalances that are keeping the nervous system stuck — making it much easier for the gut to repair and function normally again.
The Body Code acts like a map, helping us pinpoint exactly where the body needs support most — whether that's something physical, emotional, or energetic. And once the nervous system starts to settle, the gut usually follows.
If your gut issues flare during stressful times, your body is responding exactly as it's designed to. The key is learning how to switch off that stress response and create the conditions where healing can actually happen.
