Can Stress Cause Digestive Problems?

If you’ve ever had “butterflies” in your stomach before a big event — or found yourself running to the bathroom when you’re anxious — you’ve already experienced the powerful connection between your mind and your gut.

How Stress Affects Digestion

When you’re stressed, your body switches into fight-or-flight mode.
Blood flow moves away from the digestive organs toward the muscles, your breathing and heart rate speed up, and digestion slows down.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Bloating and discomfort

  • Constipation or diarrhoea

  • Food sensitivities

  • Poor nutrient absorption

  • Increased inflammation in the gut

For some people, chronic stress can even trigger or worsen gut conditions like IBS.

Why the Gut–Brain Connection Matters

Your gut and brain communicate constantly through the vagus nerve. When your nervous system is dysregulated — stuck in stress mode — it disrupts this communication. That’s why calming the nervous system is often just as important as what you eat for gut healing.

My Approach: Healing from Both Angles

In my own journey, addressing stress was a turning point in healing my digestion. Using The Body Code, chakra ascension mapping, and nervous system regulation tools, I’ve helped both myself and my clients shift the body out of fight-or-flight, making it easier for the gut to repair and function normally again.

If your gut issues seem to flare during stressful times, it’s not “all in your head” — your body is responding exactly as it’s designed to. The key is learning how to switch off the stress response and create a state where healing can happen.
