Can You Use The Body Code for PMS and PMDD?

If you've ever felt like a completely different person the week before your period — irritable, anxious, emotional, exhausted, or like your body has turned against you — you're not alone. PMS and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) can feel like an emotional hijacking, and for years, I didn’t think there was anything I could do about it.

But then I discovered the Body Code.

What Is PMDD (and How Is It Different From PMS)?

PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) affects around 75% of menstruating women. PMDD, on the other hand, is a more severe, clinically diagnosed condition impacting about 5-10%. The symptoms can be debilitating: depression, rage, anxiety, mood swings, fatigue, sleep issues, and a deep sense of hopelessness. It’s not just “hormones” — it’s how your brain and nervous system respond to the natural fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone each month.

My Experience with PMDD and Hormonal Imbalance

For years, I rode an emotional roller coaster every single month. I was diagnosed with depression, PMDD, and later perimenopause. The week before my period was the hardest — I felt like a completely different person. I was reactive, overwhelmed, and exhausted. I dreaded it, and so did my family.

My anxiety during this stage of my cycle was sometimes completely consuming. It would paralyse me. It made not want to leave the house or see anyone. And then there were the tears. Bursts of uncontrollable sobbing that sometimes felt like they came from nowhere.

I remember the first time sometime told me I had PMDD. I had rung a natural health supplier to ask for advice (this was right at the beginning of my career as a holistic nutritionist) and I burst into tears on the phone. The naturopath that I was speaking to was so lovely and she said it so casually - assuming I already knew that was what was going on with my body. But even though I knew what PMDD was, it hadn’t occurred to me that I had it. My GP’s answer was to simply put me on (back) on the Oral Contraceptive Pill.

The trouble with conditions like PMDD in my experience, is that the mainstream solutions for these conditions is the Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) or anti-depressants like SSRI’s. The oral contraceptive pill is often handed out like candy — I was put on it at just 13 years old for period pain and bad skin. I stayed on it until I was 30 (because I knew I was ready to start a family), and coming off it was awful. I swore I’d never go back on it again. And I did try anti-depressants but they weren’t for me. I tried a couple of different kinds but I didn’t like the way they made me feel. And intuitively I knew that there was another way.

So I threw myself into natural health and was determined to heal myself this way. I spent thousands of dollars on functional health tests and literally hundreds of dollars a month on supplements. And it helped for a while, but as soon as I stopped taking them my symptoms would worsen, and spending that much money a month on supplements just wasn’t sustainable.

And subconsciously, on an energetic and emotional level, I felt like I was broken. My self-worth and self-esteem were really low. It was almost as if I didn’t feel like I deserved to be well. I was stuck in these energetic self-sabotaging loops, but of course, I didn’t really know that at the time.

It wasn’t until I began using the Body Code — on myself — that things really changed.

How I Used the Body Code to Heal My PMDD

The Body Code is a holistic healing system that works with the subconscious mind to identify and release trapped emotions, energetic blocks, and physiological imbalances. And when I started focusing on my brain, hormone centers, and neurotransmitters, something clicked.

I cleared imbalances in:

  • The hypothalamus (your brain’s hormone command center)

  • The pituitary and pineal glands

  • Reproductive hormone circuits

  • Neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA

  • Disconnections between brain and body tissues

  • Subconscious beliefs around womanhood, safety, control, and identity

And little by little… things shifted.

I wasn’t crying in the pantry anymore. I wasn’t yelling at my kids over nothing. I felt like myself all month long. Today, I feel more calm, grounded, and in control than I ever thought possible. Don’t get me wrong, I still get a little ‘niggly feeling’ from time to time during my luteal phase or the beginning of my cycle, but I have the tools to manage it now.
