When Anxiety Takes Over
School anxiety is one of the hardest things to watch as a parent. It’s more than just “nerves” — it can consume a child’s whole world and ripple through the whole family.
I know this first-hand. When my son found out we were moving to a different town, his anxiety spiraled. He had panic attacks, sleepless nights, and would cry his eyes out almost every day. It was gut-wrenching.
We tried everything — hypnotherapy, supplements, traditional therapy — and while some of it helped a little, nothing seemed to fully shift the root of what was happening. His anxiety was consuming, and it felt like we were running out of options.
Why Kids Struggle with School Anxiety
Kids are incredibly sensitive, especially before about age 8 when their brains are in more absorbent brainwave states. They pick up on energy around them — the stress of a household, fear of change, even inherited patterns.
School transitions can bring up layers of fear:
Fear of rejection (“What if nobody likes me?”).
Fear of the unknown (“I don’t know where to go, what to do, or who to trust.”).
Fear of failure (“What if I’m not good enough?”).
For sensitive or empathic kids, these worries can feel overwhelming — and the nervous system reacts with tummy aches, panic, sleeplessness, or meltdowns.
